Lago di Carezza, the Karersee in German, is a small mountain lake in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, northern Italy, on the edge of the Latemar forest, about 20 km southeast of Bolzano in a straight line. It lies at 1,520 metres in the municipality of Welschnofen. The lake is known for its wonderful colours and its view of the Latemar range. It is about 300 metres long and 140 metres wide and is fed by underground springs, so its water level changes with the seasons. A local legend says its colours come from a rainbow that shattered and fell into the water. Emerald, turquoise and blue water stretches between dense dark fir forest, with the jagged pink peaks of the Latemar rising behind and mirrored in the still surface. The colour shifts with the light and the season, and in winter the lake freezes under snow. Visitors follow a short path around the lake in about half an hour; going down to the water or swimming is forbidden to protect it. Early morning on a clear day gives the best reflections before the crowds.
