Epuyén is a glacial lake of about 1,740 hectares filling a narrow west-east valley in northwest Chubut, near the villages of Epuyén and El Hoyo and about forty kilometres south of El Bolsón. Mountains clad in coihue forest surround it, and its water drains through the Epuyén river into Lake Puelo and on toward the Pacific in Chile. Its best-known access is Puerto Patriada beach near El Hoyo, with pebbles, sand and clear water, visited in summer for swimming, kayaking and salmon and trout fishing, with campsites and cafés. The village of Epuyén gives a quieter access at the eastern end. Its shores are not inside a national park; most are provincial reserves, and access and walks are free. It is calmer than the region's big lakes, good for a quiet day on the water.
