Lago Escondido, the «Hidden Lake», is a forest-ringed mountain lake in the heart of the Tierra del Fuego ranges, about 57 kilometres north of Ushuaia on National Route 3. The best of it is that the road climbs to the Garibaldi Pass, from where a wide view opens over the lake in the valley below and the great Lake Fagnano on the horizon. Its water shifts with the light between deep blue and green, surrounded by lenga forests and mountains snow-capped most of the year. A short gravel road leads down to the shore, where there is a small lodge, for a quiet stroll or fishing. The viewpoint and lake are free, usually seen on a day trip along Route 3 towards Lake Fagnano and Tolhuin. In winter the road can be icy, so check conditions.
