Futalaufquen is a glacial lake in Los Alerces National Park in Chubut province, its name from the Mapuche language meaning «great lake». It covers about 4,460 hectares with an average depth of around 150 metres; the Arrayanes river links it to Lago Verde, and its waters drain into Lake Krüger and eventually reach the Pacific through Chile. On its shore lies the village of Villa Futalaufquen, the park headquarters and visitor centre, surrounded by beaches, campsites, lodges and trails through forests of coihue and the ancient alerce trees the park is named after. Boat trips across the lakes leave from its jetties, and patient watchers see native ducks and trout in its waters. The national park fee is charged, 35,000 pesos a day for foreign visitors from June 2026, and boat trips cost extra in season.
