Lago Gutiérrez is a blue glacial lake south of Bariloche, between Cerro Otto and the slopes of Cerro Catedral, named by the explorer Francisco Moreno in 1877. The quiet Villa Los Coihues neighbourhood sits at its north end, and cypress and coihue forests and small pebble beaches ring it. It is one of the lakes closest to the city and among the calmest, visited for cold summer swims, kayaking and stand-up paddling, fishing and walks along its shores and through the surrounding woods, while National Route 40, running beside it, gives fine views of water and mountains. It is easy to reach by car or bus from Bariloche in about a quarter of an hour, and its shores are free.
