Huechulafquen, «great lake» in the Mapuche language, is the largest lake in Lanín National Park, stretching west toward the snow-capped Lanín volcano (3,776 m), whose glacier-covered southern face rises above its far end. Its waters are some 500 to 800 metres deep, and it forms one system with the smaller Paimún and Epulafquen lakes. The park entrance is about 22 kilometres from Junín de los Andes, and a road runs along the north shore past campsites, simple lodges and beaches. From Puerto Canoas a catamaran crosses toward Lake Epulafquen past old lava flows, with the finest views of the volcano, and the lake is famed for fly fishing for brown and rainbow trout. The national park fee is charged at the Huechulafquen entrance: 35,000 pesos a day for foreign visitors from June 2026. Summer is the season, and many services close the rest of the year.
