Lago Igapó is the best-known landmark of Londrina, in northern Paraná, and its main green escape. The first lake was formed by damming the Cambé stream and opened on 10 December 1959, the city's silver jubilee, under mayor Antônio Fernandes Sobrinho, as a fix for a drainage problem caused by a natural rock barrier. Further stretches of the stream, cut by roads, were dammed in turn, forming the Cambé Linear Park of four lakes, Igapó I to IV, with an embankment between the second and third, over some 4,500 metres. Lakes I and II are the busiest. Locals come to its shores to walk, run, cycle and watch the sunset, among green spaces and the surrounding buildings. The lake has had to be drained five times to remove silt and repair the banks and dam, so you may sometimes find works under way.
