Lake Janauari and its ecological park are among the best-known stops on river trips from Manaus, near the meeting of the Negro and Solimões rivers. The park covers some nine thousand hectares of upland forest, floodplain forest and flooded forest. Visitors come above all for the giant Victoria water lilies, the famous Amazon water plant whose huge round leaves float on the surface. Small boats slip through narrow channels in the flooded forest, where birds, monkeys and sloths can be seen, and trips usually stop at floating restaurants and craft shops. The trip changes with the season: when the water is high, boats roam the flooded forest; when it is low, a forest walk may replace the canoe ride. A visit to Janauari is usually combined in a half-day or full-day trip with the Meeting of the Waters. Ask about the best time to see the lilies before booking.
