Musters is a broad lake at the heart of Patagonia, in southern Chubut province near the town of Sarmiento; with neighbouring Lake Colhué Huapi it forms the end of the closed basin of the Senguerr river, in the great hollow called the Bajo de Sarmiento. The explorer Francisco Moreno named it in 1876 after the English traveller George Musters; the Tehuelche had called it Otrón. Its turquoise-blue water amid brown, dry steppe is striking, and it supplies drinking water to Comodoro Rivadavia, Sarmiento, Rada Tilly and Caleta Olivia. People come for sport fishing and picnics, and the strong Patagonian winds have made it a kitesurfing spot. Visiting is free; pair it with the petrified forest near Sarmiento on a day trip from Comodoro.
