Lake Paranoá is an artificial lake in Brasília, imagined by the Cruls Mission in 1894 and made real with the building of the capital under President Juscelino Kubitschek, when the Paranoá river was dammed on 12 September 1959. Its Tupi name means «sea cove». It covers 48 square kilometres, reaches 38 metres at its deepest and runs about 80 kilometres around, at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. It was created to raise humidity on the dry plateau, and the Lago Sul and Lago Norte residential areas on its two peninsulas take their names from it. Its shores hold embassies and consulates, sports clubs, restaurants, the University of Brasília and the Palácio da Alvorada, the president's official residence. It has three islands that are ecological reserves and artificial beaches such as the Prainha, with water sports and boat trips, and locals head to lakeside restaurants at sunset. Untreated discharges affect it, so check where swimming is suitable.
