Lago Tromen is a mountain lake in Lanín National Park, lying directly north of Lanín volcano and the Tromen, or Mamuil Malal, pass into Chile, about 64 kilometres from Junín de los Andes on a good road. From its shore the snow-capped cone of Lanín rises very close, one of the region's finest sights, and the main route up the volcano starts here. Dense Andean-Patagonian forest surrounds the lake, including pehuén woods, and with so few places to stay its shores remain quiet and nearly wild, with a campsite as the only lodging. Several Mapuche communities live in the valley leading to it, and near the lake are a border police post and customs at the frontier. The national park fee applies; the area suits short walks, picnics and photography, and the volcano climb with a guide and permit.
