Paraguay's best-known lake, broad and calm among green hills east of Asunción, made famous by the song «Recuerdos de Ypacaraí», written by Paraguayan musicians in the 1950s and sung in many languages around the world. Small towns ring the lake, each with its own character: San Bernardino, the smart resort on the east shore, Areguá, the pottery and art town on the west shore, and little Ypacaraí. Hills, woods and summer houses surround it. Capital residents come at weekends to stroll the shores, take boat rides, watch the sunset from wooden piers and eat at lakeside restaurants. The view from Areguá's hills over the wide lake is lovely. Water quality varies and swimming is not advised in many parts, so check locally. Paraguayan summers are very hot and humid from November to March, so carry water and a hat; winter is milder for sightseeing.
