Lagoa Azul, the Blue Lagoon, is a small clear-water cove on the north-west coast of São Tomé Island, between the city of São Tomé and Neves. It is known for turquoise water good for swimming and snorkelling, and for huge baobab trees on the hill beside it. It is one of locals' favourite weekend spots. The cove lies in the driest part of the island, so its plants differ from the southern rainforest, with grassland and baobabs. On the hill above stands a small red and white striped lighthouse facing the ocean. Local groups work to protect the environment here. You see a small green headland running into the sea, topped by baobabs, with a little pebble and sand beach below and clear blue water. On the other hill the red and white lighthouse rises from tall grass. From above, the whole cove shows its bright blue. It is about 15 km from central São Tomé in a straight line. Bring snorkelling gear if you want it, as there are few services. Carry water and a hat, and leave no litter.
