Lagoa da Conceição is a coastal lagoon in the east of Santa Catarina Island, between a chain of forested hills, white sand dunes and the Atlantic, linked to the sea by a channel that runs past the fishing village of Barra da Lagoa. A small bridge by the village of the same name divides it into an inner and an outer lagoon. Protected areas surround it, among them the Lagoa da Conceição dunes park to the south and the Rio Vermelho park to the north. On its western shore is Costa da Lagoa, a village reached only by boat or on foot, with fish restaurants and a small waterfall. Along the southern shore runs Avenida das Rendeiras, named after the lacemakers who inherited their craft from settlers from the Azores. The finest view is from the lookout on the road over the hill, taking in the whole lagoon, the dunes and the ocean beyond. Visitors come to paddle and kitesurf, and for the restaurants and cafés of the village, which is crowded on summer nights.
