The Lagoa da Jansen Ecological Park in São Luís was created by a law of 23 June 1988 over 150 hectares, 4 km from the historic centre, surrounded by the São Francisco, Renascença, Ponta d'Areia and Ponta do Farol districts and close to Ponta d'Areia beach. The lake is really a man-made lagoon: the area was mangrove swamp crossed by two tidal creeks, and when the Ana Jansen avenue was built over one of them on an earth embankment in the 1970s, the fill acted as a dam and created the lagoon. Building then spread round it, from upmarket districts to houses on stilts. The park has leisure areas open to visitors, and entry is free.
