Parangaba Lagoon is Fortaleza's largest lagoon by volume of water, covering about 36 hectares and giving its name to the district around it; it is part of the Ceará river basin. The city's metro terminal and the Parangaba sports hall look out over it. It draws a varied crowd, from fishermen to people out for leisure, and is known for the Feira da Parangaba, a market held every Sunday on the landscaped ground by its shore. The water is not fit for swimming, but since 2018 the city has worked to stop household waste being discharged into it and to clean it. Plans to revamp its surroundings include a cycle lane around it, a pier for viewing and fishing and green spaces, turning it into a park for the district. It is best visited on a Sunday morning with the market.
