Ibiraquera Lagoon is a coastal lagoon in Imbituba, south of Garopaba, that forms a sand bar along the shore known as the Barra de Ibiraquera and Ibiraquera beach. It is considered one of the country's best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing, hosting national championships in both every year. The lagoon is also known for pink shrimp fishing and for its protected environment, lying within the Right Whale protection area. The bar is opened to the sea once a year after assessing tides, wind, the lagoon level and the presence of shrimp larvae and fish shoals, a decision taken by a committee of fishers, residents, sportspeople, the city and the protected area; wind and tide then slowly push the sand back and the bar re-forms. It suits learning to kitesurf on calm water or walking along its shores; check water-sports schools and the weather.
