Messejana Lagoon lies in the Messejana district in the south of Fortaleza and is part of the Cocó river basin. Its surface covers 33.7 hectares with more than 865,000 cubic metres of water, making it the city's second-largest lagoon. It is one of the loveliest sights of the Messejana district, which itself grew from the indigenous settlement around the lagoon and played an important part in Fortaleza's history. Around it are the Messejana market and the integrated bus terminal. The lagoon frames Fortaleza's largest statue of Iracema, over 12 metres tall and weighing 16 tonnes; Iracema is the heroine of José de Alencar's famous novel, closely tied to Ceará. The water is not fit for swimming, but the shore makes a short stroll.
