Calm.
Lagoa do Bonfim is the largest lake in Rio Grande do Norte, about nine square kilometres, in the municipality of Nísia Floresta some forty minutes south of Natal, set among sand dunes and coastal woodland. Its fresh water is calm and deeper in places, which suits water sports, swimming and small boats, and small restaurants and clubs line its shores. People from Natal come at weekends, and many buggy tours of the south coast stop here. The lake also matters to the state: it feeds a water-supply system serving about 220,000 people in the interior. It fills between May and June, and its level drops sharply in dry years.
