Majestic view.
Lagoa Feia, the «Ugly Lagoon», is a large lagoon on the border of Campos dos Goytacazes and Quissamã in northern Rio de Janeiro state. Despite its name it is a beautiful, majestic lagoon with calm water, whose waves stay small even on stormy days. The name goes back to the «Seven Captains» who discovered it on a stormy day and saw something frightening in its waves breaking on the shores. It is the body of water that regulates a vast hydrographic region of dozens of lagoons linked by a network of channels; a 1934 study estimated it controlled 8,650 square kilometres, and it is fed mainly by the Macabu and Ururaí rivers. The lagoon is threatened by uncontrolled use of its water and by landfill along its banks, and has shrunk to a third of its original area over the last hundred years. Visitors come for the wide water views, birdlife and sunsets on a trip from Campos.
