Lagoa Juparanã is one of the largest freshwater lagoons in Brazil by volume, covering more than sixty-two square kilometres between the municipalities of Linhares, Rio Bananal and Sooretama, with depths of up to twenty-one metres. Its Tupi name means «freshwater sea»; it is the largest of the coastal lagoons in the Doce River basin and connects to the river through a small stream in Linhares. In the north of the lagoon lies the «Emperor's Island», with a landmark commemorating two famous visits: Emperor Dom Pedro II in 1860 and President Getúlio Vargas in 1954. The island keeps its natural vegetation and is reached by boat, giving a sweeping view over the lagoon and its beaches. More than forty beaches line the shores, most on private property; those open to the public include Três Pontas and Caju. Access is from km 137 of the BR-101 highway, about twelve kilometres from central Linhares.
