Over the blue abyss.
Lagoa Misteriosa, the «Mysterious Lagoon», is a flooded cave at the bottom of a forest-ringed sinkhole about 75 metres deep, in Jardim, some 50 km from Bonito. Its water is so clear that visibility exceeds 40 metres. It is named for the mystery of its depth: no one has reached the bottom, and the deepest point recorded, more than 220 metres, was reached by a diver in 1998, making it the seventh deepest cave in Brazil. At about eight metres down, two shafts some ten metres wide open and drop vertically. The classic activity is snorkelling on the surface with mask, snorkel and vest alongside a guide, after a short forest trail, and there is scuba diving at several levels and technical diving for certified divers. Floating costs about R$270 in low season and R$298 in high season with one agency in 2026, and R$210-252 with others, the same price for adults and children. Advance booking through Bonito agencies is essential.
