Mundaú Lagoon is a coastal lagoon in Alagoas, shared by Maceió, the state capital, Santa Luzia do Norte and Coqueiro Seco. Its Tupi name means «river of thieves» or «thieves' watering place». It covers 23 square kilometres and connects with the sea and the Manguaba lagoon through a large network of channels that cut across the plain, forming dozens of small islands. Its broad mangroves and wealth of fish, crabs, shrimp and shellfish make it an environment of rare beauty on which many local people depend for fishing. Among its best-known sights are the Nove Ilhas, the Nine Islands, an archipelago built up from sediment of the Mundaú and Paraíba do Meio rivers; a boat tour among them is one of Maceió's favourite outings, and one island holds a hotel complex. The lagoon suffers from sewage pollution from the surrounding towns, so it is not suitable for swimming near the city.
