Laguna de Chascomús is a broad plains lake on the eastern edge of the town of Chascomús, in the Salado river basin amid the Pampas, the second in a chain of linked lakes called Las Encadenadas. A long waterfront promenade and reed beds ring it, and at sunset it turns into a canvas of water and sky. Its abundant water plants make it home to many birds, notably coots, black-necked swans and herons, and anglers fish it for pejerrey. Porteños come at weekends to walk, run and cycle the promenade, paddle and sail small boats, and watch birds. The town itself is one of the province's oldest, with quiet streets and old houses, about an hour and a half by car or train from the capital. Walking around the lake is free.
