Laguna de los Pozuelos is a broad, shallow lake on the high Puna plateau in the far north of Jujuy province, protected as a Natural Monument of some sixteen thousand hectares between the villages of Rinconada, Cieneguillas and Pozuelos; the lake itself is about 25 kilometres long. In 1990 it became Argentina's first biosphere reserve, and in 1992 it was added to the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. Its importance lies in its Puna waterbirds: large flocks of flamingos of several species, Andean ducks and geese, and migratory shorebirds that stop here on their long journeys, making it also a key site in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network. Around it lie dry grassy plains where vicuñas and llamas roam, and distant mountains in desert colours. Visiting is free; roads are gravel and the altitude is 3,400-3,800 metres, so going with a guide or a 4x4 is best, and check in at the ranger post.
