Laguna La Brava is a kidney-shaped lake of about 430 hectares at kilometre 40 of Route 226, some forty kilometres from Mar del Plata, three to seven metres deep. Its western shore runs beside the rocky Sierra Brava, part of the Tandilia hills, and together they make a scene some compare to Patagonia. People come for fishing, water sports, shoreline walks and birdwatching, paragliding from the hills and stargazing under skies far from city lights. On its northern shore are a small village and a free public picnic area overlooking the water. Visiting is free; it makes an easy half-day trip from Mar del Plata, sometimes combined with Balcarce.
