Mar Chiquita, or the «Sea of Ansenuza», is the largest salt lake in South America and Argentina's biggest body of water, on the plains of northeast Córdoba; its size swings widely over the years until it looks like a sea with no far shore. Since 2022 most of it has been protected by Ansenuza National Park. It is a paradise for birds: more than three hundred species, including three of the world's six flamingo species, seen as pink flocks on the water or overhead, along with coscoroba swans. On its shore lies the small town of Miramar, part of which was flooded as the water rose from 1977; the ruins of its old grand hotel and submerged buildings still break the surface, and its waterfront is the famous place to watch the sunset. Watching and wandering are free, and the town offers boat trips, bird hides and kayaks. It is about three hours' drive from Córdoba city.
