Laguna Nimez is a small nature reserve on the shore of Lake Argentino, a few minutes' walk from central El Calafate, around a shallow lagoon, marshes and steppe. It is the best place in town for birdwatching, with Chilean flamingos, black-necked swans, upland geese, ducks and shorebirds. Visitors walk a short loop trail between ponds and grasses, with panels on the birds and views over the big lake and the mountains beyond. It is quiet early in the morning and before sunset, when the birds are most active. It opens every day of the year; payment is cash in pesos only at the gate, and the ticket lets you re-enter during your stay in town. The wind off the lake is cold, so bring a jacket.
