Laguna Sauce Grande is a broad lagoon about five kilometres from Monte Hermoso, formed on the old course of the Sauce Grande river, which rises in the Ventania hills and flows through it before reaching the Atlantic. It covers some 2,900 hectares, with an average depth of about one and a half metres, reaching four metres in places. Its shores slope gently, with stands of reeds, and its water is greenish and clear. It is one of the area's best-known spots for pejerrey fishing and a refuge for large numbers of water birds, rounding off a beach day in Monte Hermoso with a quiet country view at sunset. Visiting is free. Its water level has dropped in recent decades, so its shoreline changes from season to season.
