The Lagunas de Yala are a group of small mountain lakes in the Potrero de Yala Provincial Park, about 25 kilometres from San Salvador de Jujuy, at around 2,100 metres, where cloud forest gives way to misty high grasslands. Of the lakes, Rodeo and Comedero are open to visitors. The road climbs from the village of Yala along the river, past the park gate, then about eight kilometres up a winding dirt road through alder and wild walnut forest. Around the water are picnic spots and short walks, and birdwatching is excellent, as the park is one of Argentina's important bird areas; the lakes are also stocked for anglers. Boats, kayaks and swimming are not allowed. There is no public transport to the lakes, so come by car or on a tour. Summer brings rain and mist; spring and autumn are clearer.
