Eğirdir is a town on a peninsula in Lake Eğirdir, in Turkey's Lakes Region in Isparta Province, southwest Turkey, about 29 km east of Isparta and 109 km north of Antalya in a straight line. It has about 17,000 residents. The lake covers 482 square kilometres, the fourth largest in Turkey and its second largest freshwater lake. The town's name comes from its old Greek name Akrotiri, and in the Middle Ages it was the capital of a small principality. Two islands, Can Ada and Yeşil Ada, extend north of the town, linked to the mainland by a causeway. Red-roofed houses crowd the narrow peninsula between clear blue water, with the causeway running out to the green island. High mountains surround the lake, the highest rising behind the town to 1,733 metres, snow-capped in winter. Visitors stroll the waterfront, walk the causeway to Yeşil Ada, eat lake fish in its restaurants and climb to the old castle for the view. The town is quiet and makes a good stop between Antalya and Pamukkale.
