Jambi's largest lake

The largest lake in Jambi province, in the broad Kerinci valley south of the town of Sungai Penuh at about 780 metres, ringed by green mountains, farming villages and rice fields, and the source of the Merangin River flowing east. The annual Lake Kerinci Festival, with its heritage performances, is held on its shore. On the northern shore is a viewing platform and park where locals come for outings, looking over the wide lake with mountains on the horizon. In the villages around it fishermen work from wooden canoes, and stalls serve grilled fish from the lake. The lake is free, with small charges at some parks on its shore. It is peaceful, more a country outing than a crowded tourist spot. The best time is late afternoon and sunset; combine it with the Bukit Kayangan viewpoints overlooking the valley and lake from above, and the Kayu Aro tea estates to the north.
