Lake Muhazi is a long, shallow lake in eastern Rwanda, about 60 km long but less than 5 km wide. It is a quiet escape close to the capital and lies about 35 km in a straight line from central Kigali. The lake is a flooded valley running east to west, with many offshoots to the north and south that were once tributaries. A concrete dam at its western end was built in 1999 to replace an old earth dam. The lake drains into the Nyabugogo River, which flows south to Kigali and meets the Nyabarongo, part of the upper Nile. Green hills and fields line its shores, and the water branches between spits of land in calm views. Wooden canoes and pleasure boats wait on the banks, resorts have thatched cottages, and sunset over the water is one of its best moments. The Kigali to Kayonza road runs parallel to the lake on the south, and the Kayonza to Kagitumba road follows the shore for 3.8 km near Gahini. Visit on a day trip from Kigali or on the way to Akagera National Park, and follow safety instructions on boats.
