Lake Narach is the largest lake in Belarus, in the north-west of the country, in the Myadzyel district. Pine forests surround it, and it is one of the best-known summer holiday areas in the country, with sandy beaches and resorts on its shores. The lake formed about 11,000 years ago after the ice ages. It covers about 79.6 square kilometres, is about 12.8 km long and up to about 24.8 metres deep. It belongs to a group of lakes with Miastra, Batoryn and Blednaje, and the Narach River flows out of it. More than twenty kinds of fish live in it. You see clear, shallow water near the shore revealing the sandy bottom, and a wide horizon of water edged by lines of green forest. Golden sand and rounded rocks line the beach, tall pines reach their roots towards the water, and belts of reeds fill the bays. It is about 117 km from Minsk in a straight line, and about 11 km from the town of Myadzyel. Public beaches are free. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Belarus, so read the current advice before any planning.
