Lake Palić is a lake and long-established resort about 8 km from central Subotica, near the Hungarian border. A large park and fine Art Nouveau buildings surround it, and visitors come for strolls and fresh air rather than swimming, as well as for the spa facilities nearby. The resort grew from the mid 19th century, with Hotel Park in 1860, a small inn at the Women's Lido in 1885, Hotel Jezero in 1903 and then the Great Terrace with its water tower between 1909 and 1912. The architects Komor and Jakab stood behind the most striking of these buildings. The Palić European Film Festival takes place here each summer. The lake covers 380 hectares, with a shoreline of 17 km and an average depth of 2 m. Highlights include the water tower with the gateway to the Great Park running through it, the music pavilion, Villa Lujza and the timber Women's Lido. Palić Zoo is close by as well. Buses and taxis run from Subotica, 7.5 km away in a straight line. Walk from the water tower to the shore along the main alley. Do not plan on swimming, as several sources describe the water as unsuitable, and ask locally about the current state.
