Lake Piso, also known as Fisherman's Lake, is a brackish coastal lagoon in Grand Cape Mount County in western Liberia, near the town of Robertsport. It covers about 103 square kilometres, making it the largest lake in the country. Its name is said to come from a local term meaning «pigeon's hole», after the flocks of pigeons that once came to drink. The lake links to the Atlantic through a narrow inlet locals call the bar mouth, and several rivers flow into it. It has small islands, including Massatin Island, which shelter monkeys and birds. It is designated an Important Bird Area because it supports large numbers of many species. From the air you see shallow turquoise water broken by white sandbanks, small green islands of dense trees and winding channels of darker blue. Mangroves and small fishing villages with wooden canoes line the edges. It is about 12 km from Robertsport in a straight line. You can hire a boat with a local fisherman to explore the islands, so agree the price first and ask for a life jacket. The dry season is the best time to visit.
