West Sumatra's largest lake and Sumatra's second largest after Toba, stretching about twenty kilometres between the mountains at around 360 metres, ringed by fishing villages and rice fields, with the old railway line running along its eastern shore. The lake is known for the bilih, a small fish found nowhere else, fried crisp, sold at roadside stalls and carried home as a gift from West Sumatra. The Tour de Singkarak international cycling race passes the lake and is famous for its scenery. The lake is free; visitors stop at the lakeside restaurants and rest stops on the road between Padang and Bukittinggi to eat fried fish and enjoy the view. Small boats can be hired in some villages. The lake lies on the southern road between Padang and Bukittinggi, so it is best visited on the way between them, with the Pagaruyung Palace in nearby Batusangkar, or with the twin lakes at Alahan Panjang.

It is best visited on the way between Padang and Bukittinggi or with the Pagaruyung Palace rather than on its own, as it is more about the view and the food than activities.
