The largest lake in Southern Europe and the Balkan peninsula, a karst lake on the border of Montenegro and Albania, named after the Albanian town of Shkodër on its southeastern shore. The Montenegrin part and its surroundings are a national park and the Albanian part a nature reserve and Ramsar wetland, home to many birds including the rare Dalmatian pelican. The best way to explore it is a boat trip from the little town of Virpazar, through water lilies and past small islands topped with old monasteries and forts, ringed by mountains. Boat trips are priced by length, and a national park fee applies at some points. Spring, when the plants flower, and late summer, when the water changes colour, are the best times.
