The Lake Tanganyika shore at Bujumbura is one of Burundi's most relaxing places, with sandy beaches at the northern end of one of Africa's greatest lakes. City residents come to swim, sit in restaurants on the sand and watch the sun set over the Congo mountains on the far shore. Tanganyika is the world's second-largest freshwater lake by volume and depth after Lake Baikal, and the longest freshwater lake on Earth. Four countries share it: Tanzania, the DR Congo, Burundi and Zambia. It is one of the world's oldest lakes, its central basin forming 9 to 12 million years ago. You see clear turquoise water stretching to the horizon, blue mountains on the far shore and small wooden fishing boats. On the beach are huts and shelters on stilts over the water, and soft sand. At sunset the sky and water turn orange. It is about 5 km from central Bujumbura in a straight line. Swim only at usual spots and ask about conditions. The UK Foreign Office advises against travel to the Rusizi river area west of the beaches, so do not head that way.
