Lake Vrana, Vransko jezero, is the largest lake in Croatia, in Dalmatia on the border of Zadar and Šibenik-Knin counties near the town of Pakoštane, about 31 km southeast of Zadar and 38 km northwest of Šibenik in a straight line. The lake covers 30.7 square kilometres; its surface is only 0.1 metres above sea level and it is at most 4 metres deep. It lies in a karst valley filled with water and is a rare example of a cryptodepression. It is a protected nature park whose main feature is a special bird reserve, a rare wetland of high biodiversity. The wide, calm water stretches between low hills, reflecting the sky and clouds, with lone trees standing in the shallows near the banks. Reed beds and wetlands surround it, and only a narrow strip of land separates it from the Adriatic. Visitors walk or cycle the path around the lake, and watch birds in the surrounding wetlands. It is an easy trip from Zadar, and spring and autumn are best for birdwatching.
