Australia's largest mosque, officially the Imam Ali bin Abi Taleb Mosque, in the suburb of Lakemba in south-western Sydney, owned and run by the Lebanese Muslim Association, whose offices share the site. The mosque was built in the 1970s with two tall minarets and a dome to serve the Lebanese and Arab community that settled in the area from the mid-twentieth century, and it became the centre of Muslim life in Sydney, filling with thousands of worshippers for Friday prayers and the Eids. Around it, Haldon Street, Lakemba's commercial heart, is lined with Lebanese, Arab and Asian restaurants, bakeries, sweet shops and halal butchers. In Ramadan its restaurants and sweet shops stay busy late into the night. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times in modest dress, and group visits can be arranged with the association. The suburb is close to Lakemba station, about half an hour from the city centre.
