Samui's second-best-known beach after Chaweng, on the south-east coast, a strip of golden sand about four kilometres long with clear water and a calmer, simpler atmosphere than Chaweng. It draws those who want a beautiful beach away from the crowds. Behind the beach is a small town with restaurants, shops, a weekly evening market and hotels at various prices. At the southern end are striking granite rocks, and the nearby hills have viewpoints and waterfalls. The beach is free and always open. Swimming is good most of the year, but some stretches deepen quickly and waves build in the rainy season from October to December, so watch children and the flags. Lamai is a good choice for families wanting quiet, close to Na Muang Waterfall and the Secret Buddha Garden in the island's interior. Early morning is the best time for swimming.
