The first and largest museum in Lampung province, opened in 1988 in a building inspired by the traditional houses of the Lampung people. It presents the province's history and culture in galleries arranged by theme: geology and archaeology, traditional tools and techniques, ceramics, coins, and costume and textiles. Its best-known holdings are the golden tapis cloths, Lampung's traditional textiles embroidered with gold thread, and the ship cloths, ceremonial textiles depicting ships and counted among Southeast Asia's finest weavings, along with the wedding crowns called siger, the emblem of Lampung. There are also finds from prehistoric times and from the Srivijaya kingdom. Entry is a token few thousand rupiah; it opens on weekdays in daytime with shorter hours on Fridays, so check before going. The museum is quiet and air-conditioned, an hour is enough, and it lies on the main road north of the city. It is a useful introduction to Lampung culture before trips to the islands and parks.
