A small, quiet island off the Terengganu coast, between Redang and the Perhentians, with white sand beaches, clear turquoise water and green forest covering its interior. It is less crowded and developed than its neighbours, with only a handful of resorts. It lies within the same marine park as Redang, so its reefs close to the shore are rich in colourful fish, with sea turtles and small blacktip reef sharks, good for snorkelling and swimming. A volunteer group works on its beaches to protect turtle nests. Visitors reach it by speedboat from Merang jetty in about forty minutes, with transfers usually arranged by the resort as part of a stay package. Foreign visitors pay a marine park conservation fee of thirty ringgit per adult, and it is an island for a night or more rather than a day trip. Boats stop and resorts usually close in the north-east monsoon from about November to February, so plan your visit between March and October.
