Lazar's Canyon, Lazarev Kanjon, lies about 10 km from the town of Bor in eastern Serbia, about 15 km southwest of Bor in a straight line. It is the deepest and longest canyon in eastern Serbia, up to 9 km long and 300 to 500 metres deep. It was cut by a river of the same name into the limestone massif of South Kučaj mountain and is ringed by rocky peaks on all sides. It is famous for its many caves and pits, the best known being Lazar's Cave, also called Zlot Cave. The whole canyon is under state protection for its unique beauty and rich flora and fauna, and because of its steep cliffs it has not yet been fully explored. Towering grey limestone walls rise on both sides of a small clear river, with dense forest along the rims and plants clinging to the rock. From the viewpoints above it looks like a deep, winding crack in the mountains. Many visit Lazar's Cave at the canyon entrance, and others stop at the viewpoints. Passing through the canyon is a demanding adventure that needs rock scrambling in many places, so go with a guide and good fitness.
