An Ottoman castle on a strategic hilltop about a kilometre southeast of Sarandë, roughly square, with two round towers at opposite corners pierced by loopholes. From here it commands the whole town, the Butrint area, the Straits of Corfu and the Ksamil islets, which is why it was built; its southern and eastern sides are the best preserved. Today it is loved for the panorama over Sarandë bay, the Ionian Sea and the Greek island of Corfu on the horizon, above all at sunset when the town and the sea change colour. The castle has a restaurant and café, and you reach it by car or on foot up a steep road. Half an hour is enough to look around and take photos; come just before sunset.
