A roadside waterfall

A waterfall of about thirty-five metres right at the edge of the main road between Padang and Bukittinggi, at the foot of Mount Tandikat, on the edge of the densely forested Lembah Anai nature reserve. Because it sits on the road itself, most travellers between the two cities stop here for photographs. The water falls from a high rock amid the greenery into a pool below, spray filling the air, the scene loveliest after rain. Across the valley an old Dutch-era railway line passes over a bridge, and the Lembah Anai tourist train now runs again on part of the line between Padang and Kayu Tanam. Entry is a token fee of about five thousand rupiah per adult and three thousand per child, the same for locals and foreigners. Monkeys live around the falls, so keep food out of sight. The visit is short, half an hour is enough, so make it a stop on the road between Padang and Bukittinggi. Stalls around sell snacks and souvenirs.
