The ladder: Levada do Norte near Serra de Água, a level half-hour taste — then the shaded easy Balcões at Ribeiro Frio — then this 25 Fontes as the moderate standard — Caldeirão Verde above it in length and tunnels. The rule: all are level by nature — the difference is length, not climb, and torches for the tunnels.

The levadas are Madeira's water genius: three thousand kilometres of irrigation channels farmers chiselled into the cliffs since the 16th century, carrying the rainy north's water to the farming south — their maintenance paths become Europe's greatest level mountain walking network: you walk beside running water through forest and cliff with barely a climb. The Twenty-five Springs (PR6) is the levadas' queen: down from Rabaçal, then the channelside path through the UNESCO laurel forest — ferns and lichens as green threads — to the cauldron lake where the twenty-five springs pour as silver threads from the planted wall: two and a half to three hours out and back, moderate of effort, great of reward. Practically: before nine or after three escapes the parking crisis and the single-file queue on the narrow path — and the short branch to the Risco waterfall (a forty-five-metre drop) is the obligatory half-hour addition.
