Lavender fields on the Tihany peninsula reaching out into Lake Balaton, among the best-known seasonal sights in Hungary. Lavender growing began here in the 1920s when a French grower realised that Tihany's volcanic soil and climate resembled Provence. Cultivation expanded, then declined in the socialist era, and has been revived in recent decades. A decisive practical point: the flowering is seasonal and short — roughly from late June to mid-July, varying by year and weather. Outside that window you will see green or harvested fields with no colour. Do not plan a visit for the lavender outside the season. In season a Tihany lavender festival is held and the place becomes extremely crowded, particularly at weekends. The Tihany peninsula rewards a visit regardless: the eleventh-century Benedictine abbey looks out over the lake, along with the inner lake, the well-known echo, and a view from the top of the peninsula that is among the finest at Balaton. Practical points: the fields are open and walking around them is normally free; some fields are private — respect the signs and do not walk into the plants.

Usually from late June to mid-July, but the date shifts each year with the weather and can move a fortnight either way. If lavender is the reason for your trip, follow local or festival pages in the days before travelling — do not rely on a fixed calendar.
Plenty. The eleventh-century Benedictine abbey and its royal crypt, the inner lake and the trails around it, the historic echo, the village itself with its traditional houses, and the view over Balaton from the top of the peninsula. Tihany is among the finest points on the lake at any time of year.
