Waves for surfers

A broad sandy beach on the Indian Ocean south of Lampuuk, framed by green hills and rocky headlands, known among surfers for its strong, regular waves, especially in the swell season. At its southern end are rocks and colourful fishing boats and a lovely view at sunset. The 2004 tsunami destroyed the whole area, which was later rebuilt; today Banda Aceh's people come on holidays for outings and food, and the beach has cafés, simple restaurants and surf guesthouses. It is usually free, with parking charges. Aceh applies Islamic law, so modest dress is required and cafés observe prayer times. The waves are strong and currents dangerous on most days, so swimming is unsafe for the inexperienced. Combine it with nearby Lampuuk Beach and the Rahmatullah Mosque in half a day on the west coast.

Lampuuk is calmer and better for family outings, while Lhoknga is better known among surfers; the two beaches are neighbours, so combine them in one visit.
